Rules for Fools

Trying to unlock the secret to mastering your favorite social network?
Two words of advice: GIVE UP
Rule #1: There are no rules
Each online social network is different (one reason why I think it’s a crummy idea to push updates to multiple networks at once). Online channels are so different and change so often that you’re going to run around like a chicken with its head cut off if you try and become an expert. Do the best you can to stay relevant. Conversation + community takes precedence.
Rule #2: There are rules, but you don’t make them
Zuckerberg and Evan Williams make the rules. You play in their playground, so you abide by their commands or risk everything. Not to say you can’t stretch what’s possible, but you’re limited to an extent.
Rule #3: I make the rules
I’m the content creator. You’re on my Tumblr account. This is my home. I can kick out those who look at me funny at will. I wouldn’t do that because I’m a super friendly nice guy, but you get what I’m saying. Those who are the creators set the tone. Those who are a part of the community direct the conversation.
Rule #5: Rules don’t make sense
Why isn’t there a rule #4? Who said this was suppose to make sense. At times a network will baffle you. Go with the flow or get out when you’re just spinning your wheels.
Rule #6: Break the rules
LinkedIn says don’t add people that you don’t know, however I see it happen all the time. I wanted to make my presence known to a certain HR manager at a high level New York marketing firm so I went ahead and sent a request to connect. Luckily she accepted and we got a dialogue going. You’ve gotta do what you gotta do.
Rule #7: Make your own damn rules
Why not?
What’s stopping you?
