Moving Etiquette

Thinking about online relocation? A little over a month ago I redesigned my online home (the site that this article is hosted on) and now I’m considering a relocation. Nothing big, but Tumblr is making me upset and enough is enough.
Whether you’re moving a large or small online community odds are that you’ll want to keep at least a portion of it intact.
Give advance warning
Before you make the switch from one site to the next, give the community some notice. Tell your readers/viewers/subscribers what type of changes they can expect and how it benefits them.
Allow some transition time
If you’re changing the name of your business or hosting under a different domain, keep the old name active for several weeks (or months). Let it be known that you’ve moved, but still keep a placeholder at the old location for a good length of time.
Cherish what you have
Take as many of your email subscribers, Twitter followers, and Facebook fans with you as you can. It’s not a bad idea to send out multiple reminders and make it 100% known that you’ve changed locations.
Anything else?
What do you think?
